December Magic Without the Bedtime Meltdown

Simple, cosy ways to protect sleep through the most exciting month of the year.

By the Elfmonn Team

It's the second week of December. There's glitter on the kitchen table, a chocolate calendar on the wall, a school concert on Thursday, and a child who is, at nine o'clock, absolutely not tired.

The magic of the season is real. So is the bedtime meltdown that sometimes comes with it.

Why routines matter even more now

When everything else is exciting and unpredictable, a familiar bedtime routine becomes a little anchor. A study of bedtime routines in young children found that the more consistently families kept a routine, the better children tended to sleep, with links to falling asleep sooner and waking less in the night.

The routine doesn't need to be elaborate. It just needs to feel the same each night.

Slowing down a busy brain

Bright screens and fast-moving games late in the evening can make winding down harder. Gentler signals, like dim lights, a warm bath and a quiet voice telling a story, tell a child's body that the day is drawing to a close.

Three ways to keep December calm at bedtime

1. Keep the same three steps. Bath, pyjamas, story, in that order, even on party nights (perhaps just shorter).

2. Dim things early. Switch to lamps and fairy lights about half an hour before bed.

3. Save one festive story for bedtime. A seasonal tale, read or listened to together, makes the wind-down feel like part of the magic.

Where Elfmonn fits

For calmer evenings, Chuck's stories can play in Listen-Only mode with no screen at all, one gentle option to try as part of your own bedtime routine.
